YSL_SL.2

What I Love: To YSL or Not To “Y” SL

Ever since this news, of course we have all been sitting at the edge of our seats.  Hedi Slimane is fitting into his new role of Creative Director (as of March 2012) of St. Laurent (he has dropped the Yves) quite nicely in our opinion.  For starters, these campaigns are all so perfect, that i couldnt decide which ones to share….so I just decided to share a recap instead!  Between Anja Rubik, Christopher Owens, Saskia De Braux….which do you love more, you decide!!  Androgyny at its finest!!

What I love: The Great Gatsby

This past summer I re-read THE GREAT GATSBY to prepare for this exciting new rendition on film due out the Holiday season.  I am so excited for this to come out, I can barely wait!!  Sadly, the movie has been set back and will not be coming out until next summer.  Maybe I will re-read again.  Here are some amazing shots of Leo and Carey Mulligan filling some big shoes along with some other great nostalgic images!!

cover

What I Love: Robert Polidori Havana

If you are ever looking for a great “coffee table” book for someone who is as much of a voyeur as I am…this book is a top choice!!  The streets and broken down interiors of Havana, Cuba photographed by Robert Polidori.  The book is called ROBERT POLIDORI HAVANA.

cover

What I Love: Paris Haute Couture Tommy Ton

This is VERY VERY delayed but too cute not to post!!!  Of course a mix of personalities and styles but I love them all equally!!!  Paris Fashion Week SP ’13!!!

georgia 2

What I Love: Georgia Okeffe/ Stiegletz

Two of my most favorite talents in history……a love affair that has inspired a lot of my work and Im sure the work of many others……Georgia O’keeffe photographed by Alfred Stieglitz.

KIDS_WILDFOX_VIOLET_-18

WildFox Kid Violet Hume

Im a huge fan of the kids like WILDFOX and of course since the early days have been a big fan of model Kirsty Hume.  Love this collaboration between Kirsty’s daughter Violet and the Wildfox kids line!!

johnny 4

What I Love: Johnny Depp & Lily Rose

I somehow stumbled upon these amazingly precious shots of Johnny Depp with his daughter Lily Rose, frolicing on a beach.  Im sort of speechless on this one, so scan through and see for yourself…….

What I Love: Edward Steichen

Just some of my favorite Steichen images…

magical-creatures2

What I Love: Magical Creatures

Since my last post was on the effects of “magic”…I decided to share some of my favorite images that I consider to be magical……all for different reasons of course, but here are some amazingly delicious images to inspire!!

Arora-Borialis4

What I Love: Aurora Borealis

On a trip to New Mexico, I picked up a National Geographic magazine and truly could not believe my eyes.  I didnt know this was existed!!  It seemed like magic on the page and so I of course obsessed over it and researched it to death!!  Here are some amazing images from the effects of an Aurora Borealis, AKA,
“the northern lights”.

cover

What I Love: Bruce Davidson

One of my very best friends introduced me to the works of this photographer when we were in college.  I am still in love with his images.  Being a native New Yorker with parents born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, these images speak volumes to me and Im sure many of you can see why…..

Cover

What I Love: Art Forms in Nature

One of the most undeniably talented men in the universe.  Ernst Haeckel illustrates dreamy romantic creatures from the sea.  Some of these are unidentifiable to the ignorant eye because they existed over 100 years ago.  I of course could not resist his talent and have a huge piece of his artwork tattooed on my forearm!

cover

What I Love: Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Lee Alexander McQueen has indeed gone down in history as one of the most inspired and influential designers of the 21st century, regardless of his tragic fate.  I would like to create my own little homage to the designer and post this lovely little recap from his retrospective last year at the Met entitled:  Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.

Carla-Bruni3

MUSES Part Trois: Carla Bruni

Italian-French, singer/songwriter, former model and now married to the former President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy.  How’s that for a resume.  Naturally, she is gorgeous, sexy and I just happen to LOVE her music.  A steady “go-to” at the MHT headquarters, is her album, Quelqu’un M’a Dit.

WEB-READY-ojojin

MUSES Part Deux: Francoise Hardy

French Singer and Actress, she may be.  Francoise Hardy, in the 1960′s embodied everything classic, chic and effortless in the way of beauty and style.

Lea-Seydoux-4

MUSES Part Un: Lea Seydoux

Most of you may know her as the charming and beautiful record collector (that Owen Wilson continues to run into) in Woody Allen’s: Midnight in Paris.  I first fell for her upon seeing the french film La Belle Personne where she plays the ever so confused, Junie.  She made it to my list of Muses due to her subtle but undeniable beauty and her insane talent on the big screen.

Burnt-by-the-Sun2

What I Love: Burnt by the Sun

If you haven’t seen Burnt By The Sun, make this your july 4th weekend must-see while you’re cozying up on the couch recovering from an evening of too many festivities!
Russian Actor/Director Nikita Mikhalkov is amazing and the cinematography which is set in the 1930′s along the Russian countryside on a hot summer day is unforgettable. I’ve shared some beautiful photos of his daughter and wife. Notice her bathing suit moment….yup, I know.

on-the-road5

What I Love: On The Road is comin to the movies!

Some of my favorite actors Sam Riley and Garret Hedlund, are filling big shoes as they play the role of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty in the new movie portrayal of Jack Kerouac’s novel, “On The Road”.  Of course Kristen Stewart plays Marylou, the 16 year old that Dean marries and tortures with his unintentional roller coaster of emotions (to put it mildly).  Im counting down the days to watch this explosion on the screen!!

beatniks4

What I Love: And the BEAT goes on…

Years ago, I had some friends that all lived (all six of them) inside of Allen Ginsbergs old 13th street loft.  Quirky NYC story of course of how they landed there.  There was an old poem that Allen himself had scratched on the wall by a window that looked out upon a church at sunset……..

Check out these fun candid moments of what this movement, THE BEATNIK GENERATION, was all about and most importantly, who was there making it happen.

Sightings: Rebecca Minkoff

Three of our favorite ladies, Rebecca Minkoff, Leandra Medine, and Hilary Rhoda, were an absolute vision in blue as they walked the red carpet at the 2012 CFDA awards. Rebecca simply killed it in our Pendulum Spike Necklace, which she paired artfully with a watercolor dress from her own Resort 2013 Collection. The end result is just incredible, beautiful gorgeousness.

Studio Visit: Malin Akerman

We loved her before and we love her even more after she spent some time shopping in our studio last week. Actress, Malin Akerman spotted the double wire chain ring and immediately ran over to buy one for herself. While she was here, she picked up some other great must have basics. Here are some fun pics to recap her visit.

Studio Visit: Cory Kennedy

Cory and I felt like old buds the second she walked through the door. We had never met before but were about to shoot a story for her pages in Nylon on how to do a DIY update on a pair of old @#$% kickers. We talked candy, clothes, coasts, and of course…jewelry. She immediately went for the chain rings!!

LM_1

Studio Visit: Leandra Medine of www.manrepeller.com

Leandra is kind of like that girl who’s style you love but not sure you can mimic because you know its more then just her style…its HER! She’s candid, real, fun, and has impeccable taste. We were so delighted to have her
come by and play dress up here at the studio. We talked and talked and talked and then we hit the cases.
Im still dreaming of her amazing feather blazer over her pin stripe button up!! Watch her pile it all on.

AJ_DBCR

AJ in our Double Band Chain Ring

In these early days of 2012, I like to take the time to reflect and relish in those memorable moments like this one. Angelina Jolie was so gracious to wear the Double Band Chain Ring in solid 14K yellow gold to the Clinton Global Initiative in 2007. Thanx to her, this ring continues to be our #1 top selling style of all time. Beauty and beauty together = perfection

JamesMR_2

Studio Visit: James MR

James and I have known each other for years…it wasnt until a year ago that we actually started working together. She has styled the current Fall lookbook and the upcoming Spring 11 lookbook. Lykke-Li-Studio-Visit

Studio Visit: Lykke Li

Lykke Li was nothing but delightful and inspiring on her visit to the MHT studio this month. She arrived in a leather baseball cap, an oversized strong shouldered black blazer and black running sneakers. We were obsessed! All she wanted was rings rings rings. She was talking about her hands and that she wanted a ring for every finger. After watching her “haunting” performance on Letterman, we now know why. This performance brought me to tears.. Draped in Black chiffon, slicked back hair tied in a bun and dripping in Made Her Think, I was entranced and brought to tears…..

Love Magazine: The Androgyny Issue

Kate Moss is stunning and making out with transsexual model Lea T., last years face of Givenchy, for the cover of this Spring’s Issue of Love Magazine. The amazing story is beyond, shot by my personal favorites, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

What I Love: Sigur Ros- Glosoli

I recently watched the Glosoli video for the very first time.  Aside from my long lived fascination with Iceland, it made me fall in love with red, foxes, lava, hot srings and the limitless spirit of children and nature.  The directors Arni and Kinski teamed up with cinematographer Chris Soos to create this land of a dream.  Of course the genius wardrobe styling was done by Bjork’s stylist and designer, Raven.

What I Love: Boards

These are some of my favorite mood boards that I’ve done but cannot seem to take down.  I look at them everyday and can’t get enough…..Below there is a great shot of Angelica Houston wearing a black hat with a netted veil sitting in the back of a car.  Love her

This is my board where I throw everything I want to look at each season.  There is always such a collage of things, sometimes I’m not really sure where they came from or how they even got there.

What I Love: Grayson with jewels

What is better than my daughter wearing jewelry……..

What I Love: Magdelena

I love everything about this photograph from J.Crew’s Spring 10 collection. This is probably the exact opposite of how I dress but if I lived in my parallel world where I would live on acres of land, make jewelry in my barn and swim in a lake while sweating and drinking sweet tea, I would probably look like her…..with brown hair.

What I Love: Couples I Love Part I

Charles and Ray Eames, will never cease to be one of my favorite couples in design and in life.

What I Love: Couples I Love Part Deux: Toledo Toledo

Something very romantic to me, is 2 people in love and doing the things they love together, inspired by each other. She designs it and he illustrates it, she sits and he paints, he sculpts and she drapes. This has been going on for the past 30 years since they met at age 13. They are the modern day Eames couple of New York City. Their home/atelier is like a dream. Perched in midtown Manhattan and covered in hula hoops and mannequins, this is my fantasy home of all fantasies. Nymag.com did a great piece on the couple at their home here in New York City.

What I Love: St. James Stripes

If you go to Paris, you can buy these on the street carts that are geared to tourists. Ive always had about one or two navy striped shirts or sweaters in my wardrobe. For some reason, I never thought to go to the store on Madison Avenue and buy from the actual brand of where it all began. I became more obsessed and bought one for the whole family. This is a little selection of what their stripes look like

St. James in Normandy

If you visit the store, there will be a picture of a beautiful castle upon the beach. I asked what it was and of course it is the original factory were St. James began and still operates out of today. Of course they have additional location but either way, I am adding this destination to my list of travel destinations. They even give factory tours.

Sightings: Meredith Melling Burke

What I Love: While You Were Sleeping

So when you have nothing else to do…why not revamp a pair of shoes! Fashion stylist Britt Bardo has set out to collaborate with Made Her Think to launch a limited edition of studded vintage products. Due out for holiday 2009! Here is a sneak peak of what she will be working on.

Studio Visit: Britt Bardo

When fashion stylist Britt Bardo comes to town, she always makes it a point to stop by MHT’s studio and see what she can add to her already so abundant collection. Wearing a white raquel allegra t, elise overland leather leggings, and a pair of beat up old biker boots, Britt layers “victorian foxtail” with “ring around a foxtail” necklaces.

Here Britt chooses “spike rhinestone stud ring” and “21 bands” necklace. “21 Bands” is a new add to the latest collection and has a sentimental 21 bands each embedded with a teeny baby rough cut diamond. Can be worn on a chain or ditch the chain and wear it as a ring. She also has her everyday pieces that she layers like “rhinestone wristlet” in crystal and silver ox and has made wearing a “double band chain ring” on her middle and ring finger part of her signature style.

What I Love: J. Crew fatigue

Is it me or has anyone else realized that since the decision to cast Charlie Speed in their catalogs, J.Crew mens has become a bit of something to watch and my latest obsession. I went into one of their stores yesterday looking for some crewcuts for Baby G and stumbled into their latest “fatigue” jacket in the men’s section (which i must say, I kind of wanted everything, down to the camper socks). A “small” fit so perfectly that I wondered if I could fall in love the same at Uncle Sams on 8th st. I usually dont like to buy “new” army navy surplus but this one is quite debatable.

What I Love: Home Life

Buuuuuuuuging out over this website. So you know when youre a little girl and you dream about how your barbie dreamhouse is going to be when youre all grown up. Well im all grown up and my house still does not look like this. I am totally inspired. Its like when someone figures out a way to say something that you can’t. Its a new language to express yourself. These rooms are my fantasy that will someday soon become my reality.

And then there’s the guest bathroom and the tea room. Its 4 o’clock, anyone up for some pg tips!!

What I Love: The Dreamers

So, if you havent seen this movie yet and you are over 17 years of age…..go now. I think this would have been more of an obsession when I was 15 or so but I saw it for the first time a bit past that age. This left me with one obsession reguarding this film…..Eva Green and her wardrobe! You absolutely fall in love with Eva Green’s character and the many faces and dresses she wears. This one here with the scarf on her head is one of my all time faves. Any 3 kids who are all charming and beautiful who flop around a Paris flat and play dress up in fabulous house dresses from the 30′s and school uniforms are all a-ok in my book.

Sightings: Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams wears “Gemini Goes Both Ways” ring to her “Time Travelers Wife” press conference on August 3rd in NY.

Studio Visit: Blake Lively

You gotta give it to a girl who knows what she wants. Blake swung by last week and did some damage during her studio visit with MHT. After toiling over which color of what, Blake walked away with an elegant selection from made her think. Some of her faves included:

Spike rhinestone necklace and victorian foxtail

What I Love: L’apres la danse

This is a piece from sasha kinens’ circus collection
www.sashakinens.com

What I Love: Sasha Kinens

So during the latest MHT sample sale, this sweet and adorable petite blonde stumbled into the studio and did a little shopping. On her way out, she described a painting that she thought I may like. Turns out, she was in fact the painter and so I was intriuged. Immediately after she left, I jumped onto the computer and found her website. She was right and I was hooked. We became fast friends and I now have one of her glorious paintings on loan hanging in my studio. These are two paintings of hers that reminded her of Made Her Think. Sasha Kinens is a humongous talent that has newly arrived in New York City.

Sightings: Blake Lively

News: Behind the Scenes: Strap

Could be a necklace, could be a strap to a new bag….could just be. The beauty is…….you will soon find out the answer to that mystifying question check out the new collection coming soon, September 09!!!

What I Love: Girl in the striped blue top!

Sometimes you see pictures of people you know and it breaks your heart. This is one of two that I love.

What I Love: What’s inside the case?

So what you are looking at here is what you see when you come into the MHT studio and peek inside of our semi precious jewelry case. From left to right, it shows: swallow ring, first in oxidized sterling silver with diamonds and then plain with no diamonds. Then we move on to show 2 pairs of swallow earrings. Again, first with diamonds and then without, both in oxidized sterling silver.

On the shelf below, there are sold old books stacked up to make a lovely home for some “fallen gladiator earrings”. In front of them is a vertical “siren ring”. Hanging next to the earrings are 2 necklaces, one is a mini “gemma pendant” and the other is a “gladiator pave ball on chain”. In the foreground sits 2 mini “gemma” rings. They are a mix of rose gold, oxidized sterling silver with and without diamonds.

Lastly you’ll find…

The collection of floating stones live here. White topaz, smokey quartz, oxidized sterling silver and rose gold all mixed in to create this little heaven. If I were to become the incredible shrinking woman, I would live here…in this case. I would sleep atop of books, I would bathe inside of sterling salt servers and stare all day at what would be the life-size sculptures around me. Maybe someone would have to make me a little teeny blanket, and I would be just fine

What I Love: Peak inside MHT’s drawers

Vintage rhinestones

A lot of people ask me if I have a lot of jewelry. They even ask me if I have a lot of vintage jewelry. I guess I sort of do…. If I would to pile it all up and show someone, it would look like a lot…this is one of my favorite places to go. It is the inside of the second drawer of my jewelry armoire. Every girl really must have one. Even if I don’t put anything on, I like to just look. These are vintage rhinestone pieces dating back to the 30′s and probably all the way up to the 80′s.

Vanity

I have always dreamed of having a dressing table in my bedroom. Of course I’ve also always dreamed of having a dressing room for my dressing table. As it stands, I have a shelf in my bathroom. The walls are black and some of my favorite things like my Helmut Newton, “private property” book or my vintage postcard that I found at lido beach in Venice, Italy, sit on display so I can look at them always. This is one of the very many “worlds” you can find when snooping around my apt.

Inside my closet

So inside of my closet there is a lot going on. First to keep it organized…I create a sort of “ambre” of the colors that are inside of it. This makes it easy to find things…..if you are looking for your grey jacket, well, it will be in the grey section. I begin with vintage khaki and then start with the sharp whites….into the vintage whites and cream whites…into the pale grey, dark grey, lilac and then bam! There is the color. At the very right of the top section are the plaids, neons, prints, denims, and what ever else looks out of place in my land of melancholy tones. On the doors, inside, are my longer necklaces that need to hang. This is a section of black necklaces. My tied up and tangled lives here alongside my 34″ rhinestone necklet, victorian black seed bead necklace and my original victorian mourning fringe necklace.

Evening

Every night when I go to sleep, I “de-robe” of all of my jewels. Sometimes, it takes a while on the days when I really pile it on. This is where they all land and when they are not put away, they sort of lay around and create their own nice little story. There is of course one of my favorite elements from Santa Maria novella.

Laying in the sun

I don’t really do much of laying in the sun but I definitely never hesitate to add another pair of sunglasses to the collection. Vintage, new, found, bought, what have you!

What I Love: Chet Baker, lets get lost…

Years ago, a friend introduced me to the music of Chet Baker. We were later sitting having some tea and he said, “turn around….that poster behind you, you know that’s Chet Baker, right”? I almost fell off my chair. I didn’t believe him at first. Since when does someone who sounds like that, look like that?! I was not alone in my fascination, not at all. During the 80′s, after spotting his face on an album cover, Bruce Weber finally met Chet Baker at a club in New York City. This lead to the filming of “Lets Get Lost”, a documentary following Chet Baker’s life from its rise in the 50′s to its decline in the 80′s. Watch this film and get to know what all of the fuss is about. Chet Baker: photographed by William Claxton

As I wonder what will be…….I start to fantasize about gauntlet clad women running through desert fields and aunty entity’s weathered skin. There is a glint of metal as the tornados of dirt swirl through and cover all that’s in their path

Sightings: Mary-Kate Olsen

Studio Visit: Agyness Deyn

A couple of weeks ago, Agyness Deyn and Robyn Berkley (of People’s Revolution) stopped into MHT to do a little jewelry shopping. The girls were doing the ‘ol debate over which necklace would work better. After bouncing back and forth…..Agyness went with the wrap your stones necklace in silver ox with yellow ribbon. She also added the floating inverted stone studs, along with Robin, as well as the kissing swallows cuff in oxidized silver with rough cut diamonds and the swinging bell post earrings. I’m always happy to be of service in the field of a “jewelry fly by”.
